The Bear” – July 2006

Issue 5/06

Good communication and athletics seldom go hand in hand.  How many of us seem to want to operate in a narrow world, ignoring the wider picture?  And so much good work is lost.

With the New Regions and England Athletics it becomes even more important that ‘the right hand knows what the left hand is doing’.  Indeed it is dispiriting when information conveyed from the County fails to percolate through and much later an individual response to us is……’I had no idea, no knowledge ………’

Please, let’s help one another!! ‘the bear’ is widely distributed and wider still if required.  But to ensure increasingly more are working together.

PLEASE COPY, DISPLAY, DRAW ATTENTION TO THE UP TO DATE PICTURE,

EVEN MARKING PARTICULAR ITEMS

1                     WEST MIDLANDS REGIONAL COUNCIL

Elections were not required as there were six candidates for six places.  The following have their first meeting on Monday 17th July

Stewart BARNES – Warwickshire County A A Treasurer (01926 – 512810)

Graham HEELEY – Warwickshire County A A Trustee

John GRAVES - Tamworth A C – previously Interim Chairman

Chris LOCKLEY – Staffordshire A A

Dave RUSSELL – Wolverhampton & Bilston A C

Brian EGGLETON – Stoke on Trent

We congratulate them.  Others may be co-opted in due course. In wishing them well, they need our support.

2                     INTER COUNTIES – SENIOR, TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, BEDFORD – 28th / 29th MAY

2nd Place for                James WALSH  (5000m)

                                                                        Sara McGREAVY  (100m Hurdles)

3rd Place for                Hilary SMITH (Pole Vault)             well done to all.

Hopefully all our athletes enjoyed the experience.  However following the disappointing Senior entry in our Championships, Warwickshire fielded a depleted team and hopes were not realised.

3                     YOUNG ATHLETES INTER COUNTYDERBY – SATURDAY 9th SEPTEMBER

First selections are about to go out.  John NASH (01926 – 421563) is keen to learn about further candidates as soon as possible.

4                     WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY A A ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS – 2006

The fourth in the Summer Series is the BIRMINGHAM ROWHEATH 5km on Thursday 13th July (7.45pm).

Stratford (Half Marathon), Northbrook (10km), Coventry Midsummer (5miles) have gone well with three Senior awards, for Men and Women at each, plus age Group ‘Golds’ for W35, W45 W55 and M40, M50, M60.  There has been a good range of winners but Carol ADAMS (now Coventry Godiva) is amassing an impressive medal haul!

WARWICKSHIRE, as an incentive to Road Runners, has made a bid to stage the 2007 Inter Counties 10km Championships.

5                     TRACK & FIELD COMPETITION – THE FUTURE?

Has your club made its views known to Richard FLOAT (M C A A  Hon Treasurer), who is gathering opinions within the Midlands?  The County has made a submission

6                     TRACK & FIELD ‘RECORDS’

Our Chairman, Ray MORGAN and Promotions Secretary Richard CARNEY are trying to update Championship Best Performances and extend them to Under 13 and Veterans.  If you see anything ‘incorrect’ on the website (www.warwickshirecountyaa.co.uk) or can supply further information you should contact Ray or Richard.

7                     RACE WALKING

Leamington C & A C and Warwickshire County AA made a significant input into the recent Grand Prix, a ‘dry run’ for next year’s EUROPEAN CUP RACES – Victoria Park Sunday 20th May 2007.   This is a great coup for the Race Walking Association Centenary, and the Race Walking fraternity hope for wide support.
